What is Desktop-as-a-Service?
Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) is a cloud service model in which a provider runs the entire desktop virtualisation estate and gives customers subscription-based access to virtual desktops and applications.
The customer no longer has to buy and run VDI hardware, servers or storage systems — they subscribe to desktops the way they subscribe to Office 365.
What DaaS typically includes
- Virtual Desktops / Apps — Windows or Linux, in various sizes
- Broker-Service — routes users to available VMs
- Gateway — enabling external access
- Monitoring & Logs — for IT operations
- Scaling — automatic or on request
- Updates and patches — partly as a managed service, partly the customer’s responsibility

- Zero-Trust-Integration — Conditional Access becomes part of the DaaS design
- Multi-Cloud-DaaS — workloads running on Azure, AWS and GCP in parallel (Citrix DaaS, oneClick)
- Green-IT — sustainability metrics (CO₂ per user or session) become a decision criterion
