Citrix DaaS
The veteran of the enterprise workspace — today a cloud service from Citrix. When is Citrix worth it against AVD or Windows 365, and what role does the HDX protocol still play in 2026?
What is Citrix DaaS?
Citrix DaaS (formerly the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops Service) is the Cloud-Service of the classic Citrix platform. Citrix runs the control plane (broker, StoreFront, Studio, Director); the customer provides the Workloads in the infrastructure of their choice (Azure, AWS, GCP, on-premises).
The major difference from AVD: Citrix is infrastructure-agnostic. You can manage session hosts on Azure VMs, on-premises VMware vSphere and Nutanix at the same time — all from one Citrix console.
Citrix Cloud ≠ Citrix DaaS: “Citrix Cloud” is the management platform (the control plane). “Citrix DaaS” is the service name for the managed desktop and application virtualisation offering that runs on it. Citrix causes confusion with frequent renaming — currently the editions are Citrix DaaS Premium, Advanced and Standard for Azure.

HDX — the heart of Citrix
HDX (High Definition Experience) is Citrix’s proprietary protocol portfolio. It has existed for more than 20 years and is the main argument for Citrix in performance-critical environments.
What makes HDX distinctive
- Adaptive Transport — switching dynamically between TCP and UDP according to network quality (through Enlightened Data Transport, EDT)
- Multimedia redirection — YouTube, Teams and Zoom are rendered locally on the device rather than on the server, which relieves the VM’s CPU dramatically
- GPU-Acceleration — deep integration with NVIDIA GRID, Intel and AMD for CAD and 3D
- Printer Redirection — a universal print driver that works with practically any local printer
- USB-Redirection — even unusual USB devices (medical sensors, point-of-sale scanners) are passed through
- WAN optimisation — it stays stable at 200 ms of latency, where RDP has already become unusable
Relevance in practice: In scenarios with many external users, poor networks, offshore sites or kiosks with specialist hardware, HDX plays to its design for difficult networks. For ordinary office work on a LAN the difference is barely measurable any more.

Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud (UHMC)
Citrix changed its licensing in 2023. UHMC means that one user licence covers Citrix across any clouds (Azure, AWS, GCP) and on-premises at the same time. Prices sit in the region of ~15–25 €/user/month depending on edition and volume — but in addition to the Microsoft licence (Microsoft 365 E3/E5 is still required for the Windows operating system).
A cost example: 500 enterprise users
500 users with mixed workloads on Azure (office plus a few CAD users), Citrix DaaS Advanced:

Der Citrix-Aufschlag: Roughly €15 to €25 per user per month on top of a pure Microsoft solution. That pays off where HDX features, multi-cloud or existing Citrix skills are in play. For a plain Azure office setup, AVD is almost always cheaper.

The Cloud Connector and other peculiarities
Der Citrix Cloud Connector is a small Windows server (typically 2 vCPU and 4 GB of memory) that runs in the customer’s infrastructure and establishes the connection to Citrix Cloud. At least two connectors per resource location, for redundancy.

When is Citrix DaaS the right choice?
Strong candidates for Citrix
- Multi-Cloud-Strategie — workloads on Azure, AWS, GCP and on-premises at the same time
- Bestehende Citrix-Investition — administrators, images and processes are already in place
- Grafik/CAD-Intensiv — HDX 3D Pro is hard to beat
- Schlechte Netzwerke — offshore sites, Africa, India, where latency is high
- Regulierte Branchen — session recording for banking and healthcare
- Spezial-Peripherie — USB redirection for medical devices and retail scanners
- Very large enterprises — 5,000 concurrent users and more, with high-availability requirements
Citrix is not ideal when
- Reines Azure-Setup geplant — AVD is native and cheaper
- KMU unter 200 User — the complexity and licence costs are too high
- There is no Citrix expertise in the team — the ecosystem and terminology carry a learning curve
- Einfache Office-Workloads — the HDX advantages barely come into play
