What is Nerdio?

Nerdio is a management layer above Azure built specifically for Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and Windows 365. It takes the Azure complexity off the administrator’s hands — with a tidy web console covering everything: host pool setup, image updates, user management, autoscaling and reporting.

Without Nerdio, AVD means ARM templates, PowerShell scripts, Azure scope management and hand-built scaling logic. With Nerdio that reduces to clicks and policies. For IT teams without dedicated Azure specialists this is often what decides whether AVD can be run at all.

Nerdio is not a DaaS provider: Nerdio does not replace AVD or Windows 365 — it manages them. The Azure estate still belongs to the customer and Microsoft provides the services. Nerdio sits in between and automates.

NME vs. NMM — the two Nerdio worlds

Relevant for most enterprises: NME. It is deployed in your own Azure subscription and therefore stays fully under your control — including log access, backup and disaster recovery.

Core and Premium — the two editions

Independently of NME and NMM, Nerdio Manager comes in two paid editions. Premium contains everything in Core and adds the more advanced cost-optimisation and scaling features — multiple auto-scale triggers, Auto-scale Insights, the Azure Capacity Extender and the SCCM integration of application management. Downgrading from Premium to Core can remove features already in use. There is also a Community Edition, limited to 25 users and expressly for private labs only — not for company environments, not even for testing.

  • Unified Application Management — WinGet-based application catalogue, including private repositories; SCCM integration in Premium
  • Endpoint management with Intune — devices, policies, Policy Studio, policy backup and restore
  • Console Connect — remote support for AVD sessions, Cloud PCs and Intune-managed devices

The heart of it: autoscaling

This is the reason many customers adopt Nerdio in the first place. Microsoft offers only rudimentary scaling for AVD — Nerdio provides a complete engine:

  • User-driven Autoscaling — VMs are started and stopped according to the number of active sessions
  • Schedule-based Scaling — fixed hours (for example “06:00 to 20:00 only, excluding weekends”)
  • Burst-Scaling — temporary scaling for peaks (month-end reporting, for example)
  • Per-Host-Pool Policies — every host pool can have its own scaling rules
  • Pre-Stage Hosts — warming VMs up before the working day so users can sign in immediately

For context: how much autoscaling reduces Azure cost depends on the usage profile — where load is steady around the clock, little remains. The vendor documentation states no dependable figure; whether the licence cost pays off is a calculation to be made per environment.

Image management: updates without the pain

In classic AVD operation, an image update means starting a VM, patching it by hand, capturing the image, running Sysprep and distributing the new image. It takes hours to days, is error-prone and often means weekend work.

Nerdio automates the whole process:

  • Staged Rollout — first 5% of hosts with the new image, then 25%, then 100%
  • Automatic Rollback — above a defined error rate, an automatic return to the last known good version
  • Scheduled Updates — “rebuild and patch the image every Sunday at 03:00”
  • PowerShell Post-Steps — custom configuration after the image is deployed (installing applications, for example)
  • Multi-Language-Support — language packs included automatically

Microsoft has improved AVD’s native features over the years (scaling plans, Entra ID sign-in, auto-shutdown). But a great deal of what Nerdio offers is still missing — particularly the Pre-Stage-Logik and the integrierte Image-Management.

When is Nerdio worth it?

For context: in practice the threshold at which a management layer starts to pay for itself often falls somewhere between 50 and 100 users. That is a rule of thumb, not an automatic outcome — what decides it is the load profile, the Azure expertise already available and what building it yourself would cost. It is worth comparing against alternatives such as Hydra (Login VSI).

Strong candidates for Nerdio

  • From 50+ AVD users — the autoscaling saving can exceed the licence cost

  • Regular image updates — the monthly patch day can be largely automated
  • Running AVD and Windows 365 together — one tool for both services
  • Managed service business — NMM covers multi-tenancy cleanly
  • Azure Ephemeral Disks — configurable as an OS disk type, with dedicated handling on scale-in

Nerdio is not essential when

  • There are fewer than 20 users — the setup effort does not yet pay off
  • A static AVD estate with no need to scale — running around the clock, with no saving to be had
  • A pure Windows 365 deployment without cost pressure — Intune covers the basics; Nerdio pays off here mainly for licence right-sizing and bulk management
  • Existing Citrix expertise — your own scaling and tooling are already established
